Why Kanabis (aka marijuana)?!
Our core animal friendly substitute for leather is canvas. Historically canvas was made from hemp, which came from cannabis plant. Kanabis is a play on the word Cannabis and lends itself well to our canvas products.
What makes Kanabis special ?
- Shoe story, true story: each shoe has been exclusively designed and has a story to tell. To give an example, there’s an old grandma saying that opposites attract. We tried that theory on our shoes- picked the rough jute and delicate lace and we got one good looking team- ‘Jute Meets Lace‘!
- Comfort: our shoes have:
- Insole cushion
- Durable outsole
- Open toe feature for the hot climate
- Painless heels
- High quality: all our materials have been hand picked to create a careful mix of fabrics for the right look and comfort. Our shoes have been tested and certified for:
- And flexibility
- Animal friendly: compassion for animals remains core value of the business. We are PETA approved vegan
About the Founder
Devika Srimal Bapna started her career at Ernst & Young, London in Financial Services and simultaneously qualified as a Chartered Accountant. She always had an entrepreneurial itch since she was little and found her calling when she moved back to Delhi and identified a gap in the footwear industry. After a brief stint at Deloitte, she started KANABIS
“As an animal lover and PETA volunteer, I gave up leather few years ago and had a tough time finding good non-leather shoes that were stylish, good quality and affordable. I noticed the unstructured footwear industry in India- we either have the international players that are expensive and mostly do leather shoes or the unorganized/unbranded segment where quality, price, make etc. is questionable.“
“It was almost a light-bulb moment when I thought ‘what the heck, I should start my own brand!’ And KANABIS was born.”
Devika is a graduate from Uni. Of Warwick, UK and MBA from Duke University, USA. She was nominated as one of the Top 35 CA’s under 35 in 2017 by ICAS (the professional body of CA’s). Recently won the Digital Women’s Award for E-commerce, hosted by SheThePeople and the Most Compassionate Business Award from Peta in Dec 2017. When she is not selling shoes, she enjoys travelling, practicing dance (Bharatanatyam) or playing with dogs 🙂
